Food banks provide vital support to vulnerable individuals and families across the UK, including refugees, asylum seekers, and those affected by the cost-of-living crisis. At Didsbury Mosque Community Food Bank, we are dedicated to helping people in need, offering food and essentials with dignity and respect. Our services are open to all backgrounds and faiths, and we provide culturally appropriate options, including Halal meat and other essential items.

Who We Support

1. Refugees & Asylum Seekers
   • No Right to Work: Most asylum seekers are not allowed to work while their claims are processed, surviving on just £49.18 per week (2024 rate)—far below the poverty line.
   • Delays in Support: Gaps in Home Office assistance leave many without money for food.
   • Excluded from Benefits: Even after being granted refugee status, individuals often face long waits for Universal Credit.
   • No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF): This policy leaves many migrant families in severe hardship.
2. Low-Income Families
   • Rising food, energy, and housing costs mean even working households struggle to afford basics.
   • Universal Credit delays (5+ weeks) push people into crisis.
   • Benefit sanctions leave vulnerable individuals with no income.
3. Children in Poverty
   • 1 in 3 children in poverty live in working households.
   • Schools refer families to food banks to prevent child hunger.
4. Emergency Crisis Support
   • We assist those affected by sudden unemployment, homelessness,
     domestic violence, or illness.
