Domestic Abuse

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is oppressed. People asked, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should we help him if he is an oppressor?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “By preventing him from oppressing others.”

Domestic abuse is not from Islam.

No one has the right to harm, belittle, or oppress another. A marriage in Islam is built on affection , kindness, love, respect and serenity.

If you are facing abuse your safety comes first. Islam does not require you to remain oppressed. You are not alone. Many suffer in silence, but help is available. Confidential support is here.

The Shariah Council can advise on your rights, including mediation, counselling, or separation. The following are helplines that can aid you on how to deal with abuse.
