Zakah is a charity which, unlike Ṣadaqah , is an obligation that has to be given. Didsbury Mosque understands that Zakah being one of the five pillars of Islam, it is of the utmost importance to fulfill this obligation properly.

(And establish prayer and give zakāh)

The Zakah calculator takes the stress out of working out your zakah and helps make fulfilling this obligation simpler and easier. With this calculator you can quickly find out how much you need to give.

There are different types of assets the zakah is due upon. The assets that are liable for zakah are payable once the Niṣāb (minimum amount needed for zakah to become payable) are paid once a ḥawl is past.

A ḥawl is when a full lunar year passes starting from the date you had the minimum amount for your assets to become liable for zakah, without your wealth/ Zakatable assets falling under the Niṣāb.

In the UK the popular opinion is to follow the Niṣāb in accordance with the silver Niṣāb which amounts to 595 grams of silver (equil to 21 Ounces) to get today’s prices for silver please visit https://www.bullionbypost.co.uk/silver-price/year/ounces/GBP/

The amount taken from your wealth/savings is 2.5%. Deductible liabilities such as loans should be considered when calculating your zakah.

  • Sheikh Khalid al Hanafi – Vice President of the European Committee of Fatwa and Research
  • Sheikh Abdulsalam al Majeedi – Leading Scholar
  • Sheikh Ahmed al Jabir – Member of the Azhar Fatwa Committee

This will come under ‘fi sabilillah’ as mentioned in the verse on the categories zakah is payable to:

(Zakāh expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed for it1 and for bringing hearts together [for Islām] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allāh and for the [stranded] traveler – an obligation [imposed] by Allāh. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.)
